Italy's IT-Wallet system pairs the public IO app with accredited private wallets, with citizens activating via CIE or SPID. SPID has 41.5 million registered users, making Italy one of the most operationally advanced EUDI transition cases in Europe. An interministerial decree published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale on 23 July 2026 approved the national guidelines and experimental framework for IT-Wallet, setting out how digital credentials will be tested, governed and updated, with full alignment to eIDAS 2.0 the ultimate aim.
